What kinds of back pain are there?

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases describes back pain by how long it lasts:

TypeHow it startsHow long it lasts
AcuteSuddenlyUsually a few days to a few weeks
SubacuteSuddenly or over time4 to 12 weeks
ChronicQuickly or slowlyLonger than 12 weeks, and occurs daily

It lists sprains, strains and herniated or ruptured discs among the mechanical and structural causes, and says back pain can come on suddenly from an accident, a fall or lifting something heavy.

What does care look like here?

Spinal manipulation is the best-known option, but it is not the only one. Dr. Anderson evaluates the whole person, and from what he learns in your first and later visits, he may give you exercise advice and teach you ways to improve your self-care. His conservative treatments don’t include medication or surgery.

Depending on your exam, your plan may draw on manual or Activator adjustments, massage therapy and other therapies, or spinal decompression.

“Went here for some upper back pain due to a slipped disc. He treated me with heat therapy. He was really knowledgeable and knew what he was doing,” wrote Andrew Reddy (Drewski) in a Google review.

What does an adjustment feel like?

You may feel some slight discomfort or hear a popping sound, but you shouldn’t have any pain during the treatment. You may feel some soreness the following day.

How long does treatment last?

You will get a specific treatment plan. You may notice a change right away, but many people need multiple sessions. If you are getting other treatments, such as massage, tell Dr. Anderson at your first consultation.
