What can cause neck pain?
MedlinePlus says any part of your neck can cause neck problems: muscles, bones, joints, tendons, ligaments or nerves. Muscle strain or tension often causes neck pain, usually from overuse such as sitting at a computer too long. Falls and accidents, including car accidents, are another common cause.
Dr. Anderson’s office sees neck pain from three kinds of causes:
- Injuries and accidents, including whiplash after a car accident.
- Age-related conditions, such as spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease and osteoarthritis.
- Daily life, such as posture and tension in the neck muscles.
What should you expect at the exam?
Dr. Anderson will conduct a full exam and document your relevant medical history and the treatment you have tried. Come ready to answer these:
- When did the pain start?
- What have you tried to ease it?
- Does the pain travel to your arms, shoulders or back?
- Does anything ease your discomfort?
- What makes it worse?
He usually observes your range of motion and notes the alignment and curvature of your neck, then runs neurological tests, including muscle strength and reflexes. If needed, he will order X-rays, CAT scans or MRIs. These tests help him decide whether spinal adjustments are right for you.
What does care look like?
A neck adjustment usually involves manual adjustments to the joints of the neck. Your personal care plan may also include exercises you can do at home, massage and other therapies. The office consults with your primary care physician or physical therapist to work out the best path forward.
“I use him for pain management with my neck and always feel better after my visit,” wrote Deb Marich in a Google review.
Hurt in an accident?
Start with car accident and whiplash care. If you also have a headache, read concussion signs that can start days or weeks later first.
